Truckee BCycle Implementation
All hands on deck.

I worked on this project while employed by BCycle, a bike share company originally a subsidiary of Trek Bicycle and now owned by Bicycle Transit Systems. BCycle develops hardware and software infrastructure to support 30+ bike share programs across the US.
Truckee BCycle was set to launch in June of 2023. I assisted the BCycle Implementation Manager with the launch, bringing with me a backpack and a breadth of industry knowledge critical to a time-sensitive project.

While in Truckee, I coordinated partnerships with the Town of Truckee and various community organizations, introducing our new bike share system to local shop owners, baristas, police officers, tourists, and more.
These partnerships made BCycle more approachable as word of mouth and local buy-in spread the good word about bike share.
Visitors learned about bike share from these partners and were able to try the bike share for free with a special promo card. With these cards placed in cafes and shops around the city, our reach grew.
This experience refined my ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships and implement programs that address diverse community requirements. By getting into the details of the needs of various groups within the Truckee community, I fostered relationships that propel the success of the system to this day.

In addition to the ribbon cutting ceremony put on my by the Town of Truckee to commemorate the introduction of bike share in the Truckee community, I worked with Town staff to put on an engaging Truckee Thursdays booth.
With games, promos, and the opportunity to try out a BCycle bike, locals and tourists alike learned how easy it was to get around town with BCycle.
Being a popular tourist destination, I took a two-pronged approach to marketing the system to both locals and tourists. BCycle filled a need for a fun and sustainable way to see the city, making it a natural choice for tourists and locals alike. Tourists could now get around town without a rental car. Locals explained that they like to host friends and family and were excited to try the bikes rather than driving everywhere and only catching a quick glimpse of their favorite places.

During this implementation project, I tested station signals, supported station siting, and installed bike share stations all around the city. I installed GPS bike trackers on each bike and paired docks to the backend software infrastructure. We tested all stations and, when the system was ready to go, distributed bikes amongst the stations throughout the city. As a last step, I enabled all mobile app functionality for the program to become operational to end users.
